Is Datalogger supposed to work on delivery

I purchased a ONE and a ONE+, and expected the datalogger to work on delivery. Is there a simple set of instructions to go through the process of logging data, or do I need to rebuild?
I understand these are developer tools, so I'm just asking are they supposed to work when they arrive?
How can you tell what version of firmware you have?

Yes it will work out of box in most cases.
