Make OBD II uart 3.3v compatible

Hi,
I got my hands on an OBD II uart adapter. As far as I understand the uart level is 5v. Is their an easy fix on the board, e.g. replacing a couple of resistors, to make the uart 3v3 compatible.
I would love to avoid a level shifter.
