Kit #1 rpm_led_i2c not working

Hi I have got the rpm_led_i2c sketch running but it won't make it past the following line:

while (!obd.init());

I am using Kit #1 and it is connected as per the diagram in the freematics online store.

The OBD adapter that comes with kit 1 is a UART version instead of I2C version.
