Should freematics OBDII v2 function with freediag?

I'm able to get the adapter to respond as a "generic" adapter, but communications fail because of a non-standard response to an ELM command.

Freematics is returning a "?" where a real adapter would respond with "PROTOCOL ERROR" or something ...
